We strive to design buildings that are a truly original expression of the vision and passion of their owners. This is particularly important in the design of wineries, where both the production winery and hospitality space offer the opportunity to tell the story of place, while creatively meeting the needs of a working agricultural structure.

ARCHITECTURE + BRANDING
Often our design solution captures the essence of place and purpose so well that our design concepts become part of our clients’ brand story.

The design of Aperture Cellars is a direct response to the site and to the unique father/son partnership that lies at the heart of the project. For the production winery, we deconstructed the aperture of a camera into its geometric elements, and reassembled them to form the building profile. Our original sketch captured our client’s imagination and became an integral part of the Aperture branding.

Odette Estate is named after pivotal female characters in the works of Shakespeare and Proust, and the swan princess in Tchaikovsky’s ballet Swan Lake. Early in the design process, we began calling them the “three ladies.” Starting with a sketch of an evening gown, that concept evolved into the swaying female shapes that symbolize Odette – on the winery screens, in the curve of the roofline, in trio of statues set within the vineyards, and finally, in the logo.

At Artesa Vineyards & Winery, the renovation of the tasting spaces took place in concert with the redesign of the brand and label design, allowing the brand and architectureto reinforce each other to create an authentic expression of our clients’ passions. At the entry, a new 24-foot portal is rendered in white, folded like a piece of origami to echo the Artesa “A.”

Designed to reflect its unique hilltop terroir and minimize the impact on views from the valley floor, the subtle architecture of the Nine Suns Winery also tells the story of the brand, steeped in an ancient Chinese legend from the owners’ heritage. Curved elements throughout the design – in the cave walls, wine library, circular terrace and nine pools of light illuminating the cave floor – are a subtle reference to the legend of the Nine Suns.

Our client for Brand Napa Valley wanted us to translate a traditional barn vernacular into something that felt at home in the Napa Valley. We translated the traditional barn form into a more contemporary, and less expected, architectural language. The production winery’s distinctive vertical silhouette is captured on the Brand Napa Valley label.
