This unique project offered Signum a hands-on opportunity to contribute to the life of the community where our firm now makes its home.
Napa Bookmine occupies one of two street-front commercial spaces within a new, much-anticipated mixed-use building on 2nd Street in the heart of downtown Napa, the result of a long, dedicated effort by the owners, who spent five years working to bring the project to life.
We needed to bring a sense of softness, human scales and differentiation of space to the large interior envelope, with its soaring ceiling heights and expansive windows. Placing the cafe and upper mezzanine at the center of the space created a focal point and an immediate sense of buzz. The design of the cafe was an exercise in coordination, tightly engineered with no room for error. The mezzanine effectively reduces the visual scale of the interiors, provides an efficient delineation of space and forms a private area upstairs for staff and storage. The curves in the mezzanine and coffee counter were purposeful additions to soften the lines of the existing interior envelope.
Busy and filled with books, the merchandise in any active bookstore plays the starring role. However, the selection of interior finishes and details was an exercise in intention. From the cafe counter’s Fireclay tile to the local artwork and hand-painted mural, each carefully-selected detail carries a sense of meaning.
The design process was a hands-on exercise in teamwork, with the architect, client, contractor and subcontractors pulling together as true partners. The contractor and his team played an essential role in the success of this deeply personal project, drawing together a dedicated team of sub-contractors committed to building this space for the local community. The hands-on clients were instrumental in bringing the project to life, contributing to every decision and even building the shelving themselves. The resulting project is deeply rewarding for owners, team and community alike, and Signum is proud to make our home right next door.
