Often, the most sustainable approach to a new project involves building upon what is already there.

For this new winery set amid established vineyards in the upper Napa Valley, the most logical sites for the new production winery and hospitality building were occupied by an existing farmhouse and barn.

Rather than razing the two existing structures and starting anew, we decided to maximize the use of the existing buildings by transforming both into entirely new contemporary spaces. For the production building, we repurposed the existing barn and designed a new, contemporary barn around it. Sheathed in dark metal cladding that helps minimize its visual impact, the large production building is a quiet presence in the vineyard, its asymetrical lines forming a new, dynamic more contemporary architectural language.
